The Lord Nelson
also affectionately known as The Nelson

This historic pub has undergone many changes during its long life. And in recent years with us, Tom and Josie as landlords have been at the helm safely steering the ship supported by our fabulous manager Emily and her team. We have fulfilled our vision to return to The Nelson to its roots as a jolly good, old fashioned traditional pub!

We boast a regularly changing fresh menu with seasonal specials, an expansive selection of wines and beers, including guest beers from smaller independent breweries. We hold regular pub quizzes, wine tasting and occasional poetry nights plus you will often see our lovely staff dressed up in support of community events such as Pride, Maritime Ipswich, St Patrick’s Day – basically any excuse to raid the fancy dress box!!

In keeping with traditional pubs we have open fires through the colder months – being dog friendly The Nelson is perfect to finish that walk with the pooch and relax with a pint of quality ale and a treat for the dog.

We have a small snug bar suitable for groups of 12-20, it does get booked quickly, so please don’t delay. We can also accommodate larger groups for celebrations, birthday meals and get togethers and our Christmas menu is ever popular – again book early! And we serve the best Sunday roast in town!!

Our secluded courtyard garden is a real sun trap offering a sheltered space to relax late into the evening during the summer months – perfect for Pimms, a refreshing pint or one of our delicious cocktails.

The Nelson is a welcoming country pub nestled in the heart of the town and it’s community. We also have two sister pubs with equal charm and atmosphere – The Red Lion, Manningtree and The Marlborough, Dedham – why not venture out into the wilds of Essex!

We would like to thank our loyal customers for their continued support. And also look forward to getting to welcoming new customers and hopefully sharing a pint along the way!

The Inn standing on the historic northeast side of Fore Street, opposite the east end of Salthouse Street, was not always known as Lord Nelson. Instead, sometime between 1790 and around 1805, it was called Noah’s Ark, often abbreviated to Ark.

The earliest reference to Noah’s Ark is 1672, during the reign of Charles 11 when the local Headboroughs (head of the administrative district) ordered William Stephens to repair his pavement. Noah’s Ark was an Inn rather than just a tavern or alehouse, which is confirmed by an entry in the borough records of 1696, where a payment to the Landlord is recorded for billeting a soldier or soldiers.

In 1715 the Landlord was again in trouble with the Headboroughs when he was accused of having ‘muck’ in the vicinity of his Inn.

An advertisement of 1790 was the last reference traced of the name Noah’s Ark. In 1801; Lord Nelson was appointed High Sheriff of Ipswich. The name was likely changed to Lord Nelson around this time in his honour.

The building, originally two timber-framed cottages, has been awarded Grade II Listed status by the Department of the Environment. In 1996 the building underwent a complete refurbishment in style appropriate to its age and location.
